Q. Describe your “perfect” meal, complete with dessert.
A. My favorite dish certainly is traditional German white asparagus the way my grandmother used to prepare it: wrapped in a very thin pancake with a lightly smoked ham from the Black Forest and a homemade hollandaise sauce. Since white asparagus is only available in May and June, the perfect dessert in that season is a strawberry and rhubarb compote. Apart from that, I do love Spanish tapas and spicy Thai shrimp soup: Tom Yum Gung.
Q. What’s something about you that might surprise people?
A. I have just counted—I have more aunts, uncles and cousins living in the US than in Germany. Actually, I am surprised now myself!
Q. What’s something you know more about than most people?
A. More than most people? I’m not sure about that, but many friends and family members call me a “walking history book.” And in conversations where even non-smokers need to go for a cigarette, I know it is about time to change the subject 🙂
Q. What is one of your favorite places that you’ve traveled to? Why?
A. The most amazing and breathtaking place I’ve had the privilege of visiting is the Irazú Volcano in Costa Rica. You hike up, camp overnight at 3,000 meters altitude (9,843 ft), get up at 4:00 the next morning, and then hike up for one more hour to see the sunrise on an overwhelming view of the Pacific Ocean to the West, and the Atlantic to the East.
Q. What’s your favorite movie? Favorite book (or favorite Artist/Band)?
A. I love and enjoy the crazy movies of Spanish filmmaker and director Pedro Almodóvar, especially those with Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas. My favorite band certainly is U2.
Q. If you could have dinner with one person (living or dead) who would it be?
A. Oh my god, the invitation list may be endless! Could I negotiate multiple dinners?
Q. What’s something you’re passionate about?
A. Traveling and exploring the world.
Q. What’s something you would tell yourself 10 years ago?
A. For all the wonderful encounters and experiences that arise today, do not seek any supposedly important excuses to postpone them for another time.
Q. If you could master one skill you don’t have right now, what would it be?
A. I love music but unfortunately I’m a really terrible singer. I have always wished I had this natural talent.
Q. What are your personal hobbies?
A. I am a member of our local aviation club. It is amazing and wonderful to see the beauty of our world from high above. Every time I get a new perspective—some things and matters that may seem important and insurmountable down on earth suddenly become void and small.
Q. Who inspires you?
A. Anyone who introduces me to new and unexpected thoughts, views or ideas.
Tobias, it’s an absolute honor and joy to have you at EB!
