COLOMBIA, SC – March 23, 2017 – Founder and CEO of EventBooking, John Platillero, was recognized as the winner of the 2017 Pioneer in Sport and Entertainment Award. The award series, hosted by Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow (SEVT), recognizes individuals who have “greatly impacted the fields of sport, entertainment, or venue management.”
The Pioneer in Sport and Entertainment Award is reserved for an individual who has “pioneered an idea, strategy, program, or product that has altered the way our industry does business and has resulted in an achievement generally recognized for its long term significance.” John received such recognition for his EventBooking software products, which enable teams within venues to book space, detail events, manage holds and CRM, track finances, and delegate tasks—all through a web-based platform. John began EventBooking in 1999, which now serves 86% of NBA venues, 80% of NHL venues, and over 700 venues worldwide.
Frank Roach, Principal of Pinnacle Venue Services and former SEVT Director, introduced John as the award recipient, stating “This years’ recipient certainly exemplifies what this award is all about. Truly, he has altered the way our industry does business. For anyone involved in booking events—whether in the venue segment, promoter segment, agency segment, or show segment of this industry, John Platillero dramatically changed the way business is done in this industry. He is a real pioneer in sports and entertainment, to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude, as well as this award.”
Upon receiving the award, John commented “One of my favorite sayings has always been, ‘A single raindrop never considers itself the cause of a flood,’ and I interpret that in a positive way: little steps can culminate to a great big step. If you do something to the best of your ability, think outside the box, keep innovating, and serve people—success will happen. It might not be over night but that’s not what you really want. My journey has been slow, steady, and on it’s way up. And I’ve been able to savor it the whole time.”
SEVT recognized two other individuals with the following awards:
Lifetime Achievement in Sport and Entertainment Award: Peter A. Luukko (Executive Chairman of the Florida Panthers & Sunrise Sports & Entertainment, LLC)
Academic Achievement in Sport and Entertainment: Dallas Branch (Associate Professor Emeritus, University of West Virginia)
